Protest To Patriotism: How “This Land Is Your Land” Evolved Over Time [Watch]

first_imgLast night, Lady Gaga kicked off her Half Time performance at Super Bowl LI with two songs about America from the same era. She started off her performance with the lines God bless, America, land that I love. Stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above, from Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.” She immediately transitioned into a segment of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” perhaps the most well-known lyrics from the song, This land is your land. This land is my land. This land was made for you and me.While there have been some that have praised Lady Gaga for her apolitical half-time show, such statements seem ignorant, rather willfully or not, of the deeply political history of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” Guthrie’s own well-noted radical beliefs, and the deeply entwined history of Berlin and Guthrie’s songs in the context of one another.“This Land Is Your Land” was written in the early 1940s after Guthrie moved from his childhood home of Oklahoma to New York City. It was written by Guthrie out of frustration to frequent air-time of Irving Berlin’s (and also Gaga’s opening song for her half-time performance) “God Bless America,” which Guthrie felt overlooked the prejudice and poverty he had seen firsthand throughout the country during his Depression-era travels.Originally titled “God Blessed America for Me” and with each verse ending with that line as a direct jab at Berlin’s song, Guthrie eventually settled on the name “This Land Is Your Land” after his irritation faded. However, make no mistake that the song in and of itself was always deeply rooted as a political protest song.Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”While frequently the lyrics that the common American conscious remember are conciliatory and inclusive in a fairly sanitized way, the final verse from the original lyrics that Guthrie penned were, This land is your land, but it once was my land, / Until we sold you Manhattan Island. / You pushed our Nations to the reservations, with the final lyrics to close out the song reading: This land was stole by you from me. Such direct criticism of the historical disenfranchisement of American Indians is seldom mentioned or remembered in elementary school classes when the song is taught.Furthermore, another verse within the middle of the song reads, One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple / by the relief office I saw my people. / As they stood hungry, / I stood there wondering if God blessed America for me, a fairly overt reference to the government at that time’s inability to take care of its citizens. Considering that “This Land Is Your Land” wasn’t officially released until 1951, more than ten years after its original writing, this verse was not included in the recording, most probably Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, believes that due to the anti-radical political sentiment raging during the start of the Cold War and the political oppression of communist groups during the McCarthy era of the 1950s.In modern times, “This Land Is Your Land” contains a message that seems almost directly pointed at Trump’s executive order to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border: There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me. / The sign was painted, said ‘Private Property.’ / But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing. / This land was made for you and me.However, such lyrics shouldn’t seem surprising from a man who was deeply committed to the Labor movement and whose initial curiosity with the Socialist movement at the time eventually developed into an enduring interest and relationship with the Communist party of the time (though he did not officially join the party, as he enjoyed the freedom on non-affiliation). As Hitler rose to power in WWII, and specifically after the invasion of the Soviet Union, causing Stalin to join the United States and the other Allied forces, the folk singer felt a renewed sense of patriotism. Guthrie’s message became staunchly anti-fascist, with him slapping his famous “This Machine Kills Fascists” sticker on his guitar and penning and performing songs that echoed that sentiment.Woody Guthrie performing with his guitar with the sticker “This Machine Kills Fascists.” [Photo via the Washington Post] “This Land Is Your Land” continues to function both as the subversive protest song initially imagined by Guthrie and as a patriotic anthem loved by all. In fact, at points, the well-known and inclusive nature of the song has allowed it to be used overtly in protest settings, as seen below in the video of protesters at JFK Airport opposing the recent travel ban by the Trump administration, courtesy of the Guardian.Protesters at JFK Airport sing Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”Regardless of what you feel about the political history of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and how that translates to when it is played today, below, you can take a gander at some of our favorite acts coming together to play this classic American tune in the past.Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings[Video courtesy Café Corsari]Los Lobos and Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, 7/2/1989[Video courtesy of Youtube user, palealien]Bruce Springsteen, 10/30/1985[Video courtesy of Youtube user, OberstKrautwaschl]Jim Page & Leftover Salmon, 12/31/2013[Video courtesy of Darin Ranes]Arlo Guthrie, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, & More, Farm Aid, 1987[Video courtesy of Farm Aid]Avett Brother’s Performing “Pretty Girl From Annapolis” With “This Land Is Your Land” Interlude, 11/4/2016[Video courtesy of Youtube user, LifeOnBethRow]last_img read more

Van Dijk lays the foundations for Liverpool’s return to the top

first_imgLiverpool are still capable of blowing opponents away, as a 4-0 win over Barcelona to reach the Champions League final demonstrated. But there is also now a controlled approach, exemplified by the 21 clean sheets Klopp’s men kept in the Premier League to run champions Manchester City so close.“Liverpool have grown hugely as a team recently and a lot of that is thanks to Van Dijk,” legendary Italian centre-back Franco Baresi recently told AFP.Tottenham now stand in the way of Liverpool rounding off the vast improvement made since Van Dijk’s arrival with their first trophy in seven years. And it was a meeting with Spurs in late March that best encapsulated his abilities as the all-round defender. With Liverpool needing to win to remain on City’s coattails, the score was level at 1-1 with five minutes to go at Anfield as Moussa Sissoko led a two-on-one counter-attack.Most mortal defenders would be attracted to the ball, but Van Dijk stood his ground, marking Son Heung-min to prevent an easy pass to the on-form South Korean and forcing Sissoko, who has not scored this season, to take a shot with his weaker left foot. The Frenchman’s strike flew well over and Liverpool made full use of their lifeline moments later when Toby Alderweireld’s own goal sent Anfield wild.“That shows why Liverpool paid more than £70m for Van Dijk,” said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.“Quality costs a specific price. Cars are like that, a lot of things are like that and players as well. That’s why we paid it,” Klopp said.Should he lift the Champions League on Saturday, Liverpool’s Rolls Royce centre-back will forever be remembered for what he has achieved rather than what he cost.Share on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP |  Liverpool’s long wait for a major trophy could come to an end on Saturday with a sixth European Cup, but the foundations for a return to the pinnacle of Europe were laid last January in trusting Jurgen Klopp’s judgement to make Virgil van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender. The towering Dutchman arrived for £75 million ($95 million), six months after Liverpool publicly stated they had “ended any interest in the player” as Southampton threatened to report the Reds for an illegal approach.Klopp, though, would not settle for second best and insisted the club make the deal happen.A season-and-a-half later the talismanic centre-back has led Liverpool to two Champions League finals and become the first defender in 14 years to be crowned the PFA Player of the Year as the Reds narrowly missed out on a first Premier League title since 1990 despite posting a club record 97 points.“Nobody thinks about it (the price) anymore. That’s good because in this market at the moment he is worth it, or is too cheap,” said Klopp.During the German’s first two years at Anfield, Liverpool were capable of the spectacular, but always undermined by defensive disorganisation.– Quality comes at a price –Van Dijk has restored order thanks to his power, pace and poise, but also with his leadership that has helped foster rapid improvement in the emerging talents of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.“That’s what you hope for when a new player is coming in — that he makes the whole team better,” added Klopp.“Of course he’s a very good player, he makes players around him better.“He is so important to us. Not only as a player but as a person as well, he’s a brilliant boy. I could not say a bad word about him.”last_img read more

‘Extraordinary’ Benzema goal should silence critics – Zidane

first_imgGoal of the season? Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema celebrates his second goalMadrid, Spain | AFP |  Zinedine Zidane said Karim Benzema “shuts people up a bit” when he scores goals like his stunning volley against Valencia on Thursday.Benzema brilliantly lifted the ball over defender Hugo Gillamon with his right foot and then shot with his left into the top corner as Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium.Marco Asensio had earlier made it two after Benzema gave Madrid the lead, his brace taking his tally for the season to 21 goals in 38 games.“His performance was magnificent, like the whole team, but his goal was extraordinary,” said Zidane.“We know that he is comfortable with his left foot but wow, to lift the ball in that way and to swing like that with his left foot, without the ball touching the ground, truly it’s a very complicated piece of skill.“It’s beautiful to see it and I’m happy for him.“Often we see Karim as the number nine of Madrid and he must score goals, but he doesn’t only do that. So when he does score, I’m happy because he shuts people up a bit, and the work, he always does that no matter what.” Benzema is a controversial figure in France after his alleged involvement in a blackmail plot against former teammate Mathieu Valbuena. He has not played for the national team since 2015.But the 32-year-old has been in sensational form for Real Madrid this season and his latest goal was his 243rd for the club, putting him fifth on Madrid’s all-time list.“We know all these matches are finals so this was very important for us and for me personally as well,” said Benzema.“It was a beautiful goal, I think I can say it was beautiful, it went in and that was great. Sometimes I do that in practice and today I did it in the match.” Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Audit finds disparities in city athletics…Where are the girls?

first_imgDASHAWNA CAREY, a senior at Perry High School, was the top female basketball player in the city this year. “We are always looking to improve,” said Michael Gavlik, director of Interscholastic Athletics for the Pittsburgh Public School District. “The school district requested the audit to see where it stood and what improvements needed to be made.” Reluctant to speak, Gavlik added that each school is different and their needs vary, but what remains important is making sure their facilities are maintained and that students are equipped with what they need. While Pittsburgh Public School District board member Sharene Shealey declined to comment for the article, board member Mark Brentley said the district’s programs are missing something. “The district continues to (cut back) in all areas, unfortunately in some areas that do not need it. Cutting back in music and athletic programs for students puts them at a disadvantage.”While the audit found there was a significant difference in the participation of female students in athletics than that of males, some feel it is not necessarily what the district is doing to promote their sports, but a lack of interest on the part of female students.“Yes, there has been a decrease in the participation of females, but I do not believe it is because (of the district) but because they (female students) are just not as interested in it as they used to be,” said Daryl Moore, athletic director for Westinghouse High School. “I cannot speak for other schools, but in this school when it comes to female athletic participation, we offer every sport and opportunity for females to play, but do not see the interest.”Moore said teachers and coaches in his school are constantly looking for students with an interest in a sports and try to motivate them to get them involved. He said when it comes to participation, other factors besides interest are if a team is winning and peer acceptance. If a team is winning, it is easier to find participants. For instance, their basketball teams always have an interest because it has a tradition of winning, but when it comes to the softball team, there is less participation and the ladies play because they like it.Ken Saybel, athletic director at Schenley High School, said the female squads in his school are pretty full, but he has noticed a lack of participation from females. He admits the district needs to do better, but said one good thing that came from the audit was that the district saw where they needed to improve and actually did it.One of the ways the district plans to work on the issues of its athletic departments, is through a task force that will focus on and address the issue of athletics overall and Title IX. One of the recommendations from the consultant was to hire a Title IX Compliance Officer.“We have formed a new committee and we just had our first meeting,” said Saybel. “We need to get ideas to improve athletics, but need to also get more participation (on all levels) but especially from female students. We lose them along the way.”While the new task force is still in the early stages of conception, Brentley said there is no need for it because there is a District Aide Athletic Committee, of which he is a member, in place. The committee was formed to set the tone for athletics in the district. Brentley said instead of putting together a new committee, the district should work with the one in place.Pittsburgh Public School board member Dara Ware Allen said both are needed. “While the task force and the committee are complimentary, they are not the same. The task force is for a defined period of time to focus on the issue.”Other recommendations were for the district to put together a strategic plan and conduct a yearly self-audit. The consultant who conducted the audit was unable to be reached by Courier deadline.Allen said she thinks that once the district addresses the number of policy restrictions on the hiring of coaches, things will get better. For instance, if they hire someone from outside who has the expertise and interest, they may get more participation. She added that she was pleased with the student interest that went into the audit. Several students gave their insight by answering a 30-page questionnaire. While it is disheartening that there is a disparity when it comes to the number of female and male students who participate in athletics, Allen said it is admirable that the district is working to tackle the issue and committed to working on it. The Pittsburgh Public School District is now working to address a decline in female participation in athletics after a presentation earlier this month by a consultant who conducted an audit of the district’s compliance with Title IX, a law that requires equal opportunities for both males and females in education programs or activities that are federally funded, i.e. high school athletic programs. The audit found that there is a significant difference in the number of female athletes compared to male athletes.last_img read more

Nautical History Unearthed Under Highlands Bungalow

first_imgBy Jay CookIt is not everyday that a piece of history is discovered underneath someone’s house, let alone holding that house up.But this odd occurrence was a reality for Eileen Scanlon of 5th Street in Highlands, who discovered on May 26 exactly what was beneath the floorboards of a three-bedroom bungalow on her property. What she found was a 44-foot vessel, constructed of white oak and pieced together by iron nails, dating back to the mid-19th century. It measured 12 feet across, and was found mostly intact, rudder and all.Scanlon, who lives with her husband Mike in the main house on their plot, also owns a third rentable unit just behind their residence. They have been living here at 5th Street since 2010, when they purchased the three-house lot. She had always been aware of something under the bungalow.“I knew there was a boat under there because we had seen it—but nobody had any idea it was almost 50 feet long and that it was forming the foundation of the house,” she said.Rusted iron nails, ranging from a few inches to nearly a footand a half in length, held the vessel together. That particular Tuesday morning was quite hectic, beginning with a visit from her architect, Cathy Franco. “She came down because she was worried about the beams and how they were going to deal with putting it back on the foundation—architectural stuff,” said Scanlon. Next thing she knew, Franco was calling her at 8 a.m. to come outside and see what the crew on site had exposed.Once the discovery had been made, construction to the bungalow was stopped for three days. Although the work had come to a temporary halt, an influx of sightseers had just begun.“I’m taking pictures to send back to my family in Ireland,” said Patrick O’Flaherty, 56, of Middletown. “I saw it on the web this morning and said ‘Oh my God I know where that house is.’”While the general public had just learned of the ship, Scanlon was not the only local to know of its existence. Claire Stelios, 59, of Highlands, has her own vivid memories of the vessel.“I was 11 when I moved to this property,” Stelios said, pointing to Scanlon’s yard. She spent ten years of her adolescent life living there, her family renting from former proprietor Jack Elia. “I knew it, and so did the previous owner. When he fixed the bungalows, what they found in there was a lot of liquor bottles.”The bow of the boat is shown after old floorboards were ripped out and replaced in May of 2008. Photo courtesy Chris FrancyClaims of the boat’s past usage have floated around from a rum-running ship to a transportation vessel, but local historian Russell Card put those to rest. “When I went over there I saw it was indeed a barge that used to bring seafood into market,” said Card, president of the Historical Society of Highlands. He was one of the first people on site Tuesday after the barge had been revealed.“The Historical Society has known for a number of years,” Card said. “We always figured it was just a boathouse that they pulled up on the beach, but it turned out to be something older than that.”A former Highlands Council member also first saw the boat in May of 2008. “I live two doors away and the previous owner was doing some work, and they asked my advice because they saw the boat,” said Chris Francy, the 73-year-old Highlands resident.“The floor was sagging that had been built on top of it, and they had to restore it,” he recalled. When Francy saw what was under the house, he went home to grab his camera and take a few photographs. While it had been reported that coal had been found on the boat, Scanlon refuted those claims, saying that it had been another substance. “The coal turned out to be tar. The remnants we found are from tar buckets,” she said. “I had a historian come in afterwards and he cleared up a few misconceptions that were going around.”The exact manner in which the boat reached its final resting place has come into question as well. Scanlon, who has family history in Highlands dating back to the early 20th century, offered her own take. “There was a sluiceway here, so we believe it went up the sluiceway. Why it stayed there, I don’t have any idea,” Scanlon said. She compared the former waterway on her property to another area similarly in Highlands – Snug Harbor. In the days since its discovery, Scanlon reluctantly had to disassemble the barge to continue the house-lifting project. She did what she could to keep the vessel intact, with some help from the workers on site. A large portion of the bow was salvaged, along with the planks that made up the body of the boat.Currently, everything sits in Scanlon’s side yard. The planks are stacked five feet high, and the bow sits in one solid piece a few feet off of her house. “We moved everything with three guys and a Bobcat,” she said. So, what does Scanlon plan to do with her newfound piece of nautical history? She has bounced between a couple different ideas, one of them being the bow would become the centerpiece to her garden out back. She has also contemplated giving it to a museum, an idea that Card supports fully. “It’s her property, and I respect the property owner’s decision,” he said. “But I look at it from a different standpoint. I do see it as a loss to history in its own right. Something like that probably should be in a museum.”last_img read more

Not a best shade-match and a tiny shiny, but i place some powder on and it looks fantastic.Fantastic price for the money & rapid delivery. Good worth for the funds & quickly delivery. I made use of it for a fancy costume but colour match was so good people imagined it was my hair. Not absolutely sure how quite a few moments i would be capable to put on it but for the price it was good benefit.I requested this merchandise yesterday afternoon and it has just arrived. I am very pleased with it. The color matches me properly and i enjoy the thickness and the texture of it. It is extended, which is excellent since i can alter it to how i like it. Improved to be extended then also quick. It is wonderful top quality for the cost, i am so glad i didn’t pay £30 off one more internet site. Wonderful vendor and i shall purchase yet again.MISS20 Clip In On Bang Fringe Hair Extension Dark Brown4#–Straight and longside : Have had it on a few time and nobody can tell its fake i totally would recommend it. Its color completely matches my organic hair colour and it’ s so delicate and mild that feels like your own hair. My hair is pretty slim and it’ s normally tricky to make a great hairstyle nonetheless this fringe stays perfectly in area. I can’ t believe it’ s so inexpensive :o).Appears to be like a real fringe and is truly quick to place in. Only problems are that it truly is very frustrating to mix the sides with the rest of my hair, which has to be partly pinned again so that long serious hair doesn’t slip out beneath the clip-in, and also that the colour is pleasant but is fairly complicated to match correctly. This fringe appears to be incredibly pure. Deep Impact: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the Family

first_imgBy: Bari Sobelson, MS, LMFTPixabay[Drop of Water by FelixMittermeier, 2017, CCO]A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.7 million people are diagnosed with a brain injury each year. While most people assume that the chances of sustaining a TBI are highest amongst those service members who serve in combat, the statistics show that these injuries most often occur from the following- car accidents, falls, sports, assault, discharge of weapons, and impact with objects.Once a person sustains a TBI, the signs and symptoms can vary widely. Some may be very subtle while others are obvious. For Chief Petty Officer Brian O’Rourke, the signs and symptoms of his injuries were frustrating and confusing, but not necessarily easy to pinpoint. His wife started to notice some differences in Brian- his sleep habits changed, he was more anxious, and it was hard for him to deal with simple tasks. Brian’s wife recalls attempting to keep everything very normal and upbeat although she was not sure why he was so different. Brian also noticed some differences within himself, but initially felt that it was everyone else who had the problem. After being told by his wife and several friends that they had noticed a difference in him over a two year period, Brian finally sought help.Below is a video capturing Brian’s experience with TBI and the ways in which it impacted his family. While Brian’s experience is unique because it is the story of his family’s personal journey with TBI, the story of their struggle is one that is familiar to many families. There are so many wonderful resources available on Traumatic Brain Injury, including A Head for the Future: A Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center Initiative (DVBIC). DVBIC provides resources to help the military community prevent, recognize, and recover from Traumatic Brain Injury. If you are interested in learning more about TBI and its effects on families, please join us on Thursday, May 18 at 11 am Eastern for Gray Matters: Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury’s Impact on Families. This post was written by Bari Sobelson, MS, LMFT, the Social Media and Programming Coordination Specialist for the MFLN Family Development Team. The MFLN Family Development team aims to support the development of professionals working with military families.  Find out more about the Military Families Learning Network Family Development team on our website, Facebook, and Twitter.last_img read more

Andhra-Telangana divide does not impact cricket

first_imgFormer India captain Mohammad Azharuddin is one of the best cricketers that Andhra Pradesh state has produced. It is a happy occasion that the bifurcation of the Andhra Pradesh state will have no impact on cricket administration. Unlike when Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh states were split, there is no need to form new associations to administer the game in the newly-formed states. The reason for this cool situation is that, quite interestingly, the cricket associations in the new states – Telangana and Andhra – already have exactly the same districts in which the new governments will have jurisdiction. And these associations have been in existence for many decades. The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) came into being in 1934 while the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) was formed in 1953, after it separated from the Madras Presidency on the basis of linguistic.ACA secretary G. Ganga Raju said that it was satisfying that cricket won’t be hit by the split. “As far as ACA is concerned, we separated long back. ACA consists of 13 districts while the HCA largely concentrates on the city. But I cannot talk about the HCA,” Raju told Mail Today. “The 13 districts under ACA are Anantpur, Chittoor, Cuddapa, East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, Kurnool, Nellore, Prakasam, Srikakulam, Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagram, and West Godavari, while HCA comprises 10 districts,” he said. The districts that come under HCA are Adilabad, Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, and Warangal.Former HCA secretary P. Man Singh explained how the ACA was formed 19 years after the HCA had come into existence. “In 1950s, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru reorganised the states of the country on the basis of linguistic, and the Telugu-speaking areas of the Madras Presidency were merged with the Nizam State and thus ACA was formed,” Man Singh, who was manager of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team, told MAIL TODAY from Hyderabad. “At the time of the realignment of the Telugu-speaking population, the HCA was already existing. Now, when the state has been divided into two, cricket would not suffer as the areas under the jurisdiction of the HCA and ACA are already distinctly marked,” said Man Singh, who has written the history of cricket in the state.advertisementThe situation in Andhra Pradesh is a stark contrast to what happened when Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were split into two states each in November 2000. Jharkhand was carved out of the southern part of Bihar while Uttarakhand was born out of the north-western districts of Uttar Pradesh. Following the split in Bihar, the BCCI controversially gave recognition to the newly-formed Jharkhand Cricket Association while ignoring Bihar’s legitimate claims. Soon after the creation of the Jharkhand state, as many as five cricket associations in Bihar staked claims for recognition from the BCCI, with each one claiming to be the genuine representative of the state.Fourteen years later, the Bihar issue is still hanging fire amid a host of court cases that have been fought – some are still going on.In the case of Uttrakhand, too, there have been several claimants for the official recognition. This state too hasn’t got the BCCI nod, though it has allowed its women players to represent Uttar Pradesh in tournaments.Another new state, Chhattisgarh, was born by carving out a portion of Madhya Pradesh in 2000 and its teams have been competing – and performing well – in junior tournaments recognised by the BCCI. The application for recognition by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh (CSCS) is with the BCCI. Of the three states – Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand – CSCS appears closest to getting BCCI’s recognition and competing in the Ranji Trophy and all other senior level tournaments in near future.last_img read more
