SA’s Top 50 Corporate Brands critical to the image of the country

first_imgJohannesburg, Tuesday 15 September 2015 – Brand South Africa and Brand Finance Africa today announced the country’s top 50 corporate brands in Houghton, Johannesburg.• Download the reportIn the third annual study, Brand Africa Finance found that the Top 50 corporate brands in the country are valued at approximately R1.5 trillion with many of these companies also contributing to national priorities including uplifting identified and targeted communities.Woolworths and FNB emerged as the top performers for the 2014/15 year.Significantly, an analysis of the top 10 corporate brands is that nine of these operate in knowledge intensive sectors – in the telecommunications, banking and oil and gas sectors. This suggests that South Africa must begin to make the necessary investments in our human capital development to ensure that government, working with the corporate sector, develop skilled citizens in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields to drive these sectors and move the country in its entirety towards a knowledge based economy. This will be critical to ensuring the successful implementation of the National Development Plan as well towards the sustainability of the South African economy.Speaking about the 2015 results, Brand South Africa’s CEO Mr Kingsley Makhubela said, “While developing, strengthening and maintaining a nation’s brand is a multifaceted task, there are a range of factors which can assist in positioning the nation positively. These factors, if based on a solid foundation, can help the nation brand weather the storms posed by the global political and economic environment. One of these factors are national corporate entities.”“It is for this reason that Brand South Africa and Brand Finance Africa congratulates South Africa’s Top 50 brands. Your excellence in the corporate field contributes immensely to the strength and positive reputation of the South African nation brand. Your brands are sometimes the first point of contact between consumers and the South African nation, especially where corporate brands have an international footprint. Your product quality, customer service and ethical framework contribute to perceptions about our spirit of Ubuntu, our innovation, and the values that drive South Africa. South Africa’s corporate sector is therefore critical to enabling Brand South Africa to position the country as an attractive inward destination of choice.”This sentiment was echoed by the CEO of Brand Africa Finance Mr Thebe Ikalafeng who said, “Brands have therefore become more than just a logo or slogan. They are now seen as corporate assets which are amongst the most valuable that an organisation can have. By extension, national corporate brands also contribute to a nation’s assets in terms of the value they add to the country – both in terms of GDP as well as reputational impact. The brand managers and executives who oversee and manage these brands therefore play their part to contribute to corporate profitability and visibility and we at Brand South Africa and Brand Africa Finance salute you.”Follow the conversation on #Top50SABrandslast_img read more

BJP never questioned Nitish’s leadership: Paswan

first_imgUnion Minister and Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP) founder Ram Vilas Paswan on Saturday welcomed BJP president Amit Shah’s recent comments confirming that the NDA would contest the Bihar Assembly polls under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of the JD(U). “We welcome Amit Shah’s statement; it has put an end to all doubts and speculation,” Mr. Paswan said. “We at LJP have been saying that there is no need to even question on who will lead NDA in 2020 Bihar Assembly polls,” the LJP leader added. The LJP had always worked as a cementing force, he asserted and said that the party would work to keep the alliance intact. “The BJP never directly questioned Nitishji’s leadership; the media gave unwarranted importance to statements of a few BJP leaders,” he added. Speculation on the fate of the alliance was triggered by remarks made by BJP legislator Sanjay Paswan, who had said that Mr. Kumar “should make way for a BJP CM”. Asserting that there were no differences between the cadres of the BJP and the JD(U), the LJP leader said that the two parties had worked in tandem for the bypolls in five Assembly constituencies and the Lok Sabha constituency of Samastipur. Mr. Paswan added that it was in everyone’s interest that the alliance remained intact. When it comes to seat distribution, however, the NDA, with just three partners, is likely to face some tough negotiations. The LJP wants to contest about the same number of seats as in 2015, when it had contested 42 and won two. The BJP had fought in 157 seats in the last election, out of which it won 53. Even though it has agreed to Mr. Kumar’s leadership, it has made it clear that it will contest an equal number of seats as the JD(U) or more. The last time the BJP and the JD(U) had fought an Assembly poll as alliance partners was in 2010, when the JD(U) had contested 141 seats and the BJP had fought on 102 seats. On November 28, Mr. Paswan is set to step down as president of the LJP and pass the baton to his son Chirag Paswan. The senior Paswan asserted that unlike many recent generational transitions, his party’s electoral fortunes wouldn’t be affected by the change. “Mulayam Singh [Samajwadi Party leader] was forced to step down by his son. That is not the case here, I have been wanting Chirag to take over,” Mr. Paswan added.last_img read more

Rupesh Shah had ealrier wn the points format title.Advani proved his class once again, notching up his eighth world title overall and seventh in billiards, with a comprehensive 1895-1216 win against defending champion and local favourite Mike Russell in the final here. He had earlier won 881-281 against compatriot Dhruv Sitwala in the semifinalsIn the final, Advani raced into lead with a century break of 147 and a double century break of 298 within the first hour of the five-hour long encounter. With a final century break of 119, Pankaj beat the 11-time champion to clinch his fourth world title in the timed format. Interestingly, Advani had defeated Russell at the same venue for the 2009 World Professional Billiards Championship.”I am so pleased to have won my seventh world title. I took a gamble while choosing to play the World Championships here in Leeds and not the International Championship on the Professional Snooker tour and I am glad that paid off,” Advani said after the win.advertisementRupesh won his second world billiards title, winning the points format on Saturday.Click here to Enlarge “I took a tough decision earlier this year to play both Billiards and Snooker at the highest level, and I am glad I have been able to maintain top form in both the forms. This victory, like every other, shall be treasured yet has its own special meaning given the unique challenges I have faced this year. This win is a testament that if you follow your heart, nothing’s impossible,” Advani added.Advani had been in great form throughout the tournament, remaining unbeaten in the earlier rounds to proceed to the knock outs as the top seed in both points and timed formats. He lost to Peter Gilchrist in the quarterfinals of points format but bounced back in the timed format.Advani won his first world billiards title in 2005, when he created history by becoming the first cueist ever to win both the Timed and Points format in the same year, a feat he repeated in 2008.He also won the World Billiards Championship (Timed Format) in 2007 and the World Professional Billiards title 2009.The only active player to compete at the highest level in both billiards and snooker, Advani had decided to skip the International Snooker Championships due to a clash of dates with the World Billiards Championship.last_img read more

Lady Allen Implores Jamaicans to Safeguard Nation’s Youth

first_img Wife of the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Most Hon. Lady Allen, is urging well-thinking Jamaicans to take the necessary steps to safeguard the society’s children and youth, and aid their holistic development.Noting that 33 per cent of the population are children and another 11.8 per cent are youth, aged 18 to 24, Lady Allen contended that “these are the leaders and nation-builders or tomorrow, and we want them healthy and happy”.“Our children and young people face many problems, and sometimes they need the help of us adults to see them through their difficulties. We need to do that because they have special needs, special interests, and special dreams. We must give them every opportunity to become the best that they can be,” she said. Her remarks were delivered by Chair of the Friends of the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Dr. Karla Hylton, during the opening ceremony for the annual Dr. Leila Wynter Commemorative Conference at the institution on Monday (November 5).Lady Allen said that when children are allowed to grow holistically, they will be “set on the right path to do those things that are good for them… and good for us too”.Lady Allen, who is the Bustamante Hospital’s patron, said she enjoys and takes this role seriously, pointing out that “it is a pleasure because I have always had a very great interest in children and young people”.“I have a special love for them. They give us as parents, grandparents, and older people a lot of joy as we see them learning, enjoying themselves, getting excited over their successes, or just being themselves without pretending to be what they are not,” she noted.Lady Allen said that the conference has been fittingly named in honour of one of Jamaica’s pioneers in paediatric and general healthcare, and is a welcome forum for exploring and discussing issues related to the welfare of the society’s youngsters. She noted that the range of topics for discussions were relevant, and praised all of the medical professionals, inclusive of doctors, nurses, surgeons and specialists, who volunteered to share information on and examine health-related issues “[impacting] the health of our young adolescents”.The annual Dr. Leila Wynter conference commemorates the life and work of the first senior paediatrician at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.Lady Allen highlighted Dr. Wynter’s groundbreaking work and invaluable contribution to paediatric healthcare. She noted her pursuit to become a medical doctor during the early1900s when, in the absence of a medical training school in Jamaica, only boys, men of the elite class, and others selected by the Colonial government of the day were facilitated to study abroad.“[She] made it against the odds to become the highly skilled and respected medical doctor, who served Jamaica well for some five decades until her passing in 1986. Therefore, [it] is only fitting that we pay tribute to her memory with the staging of these Annual Conferences,” Lady Allen added. This year’s conference, held under the theme ‘Disorders of Adolescence’, featured several focus area presentations and a symbolic commemorative cake-cutting exercise.Topics covered included: ‘The Adolescent with Congenital Heart Disease’, ‘The HPV Vaccine’, and ‘’The Pharmacist’s Role in Adolescent Patients Healthcare’.The Bustamante Hospital for Children, located in Kingston, is Jamaica’s and the Caribbean’s sole paediatric health institution, catering to children up to age 12. Noting that 33 per cent of the population are children and another 11.8 per cent are youth, aged 18 to 24, Lady Allen contended that “these are the leaders and nation-builders or tomorrow, and we want them healthy and happy”. “Our children and young people face many problems, and sometimes they need the help of us adults to see them through their difficulties. We need to do that because they have special needs, special interests, and special dreams. We must give them every opportunity to become the best that they can be,” she said. China Telecom misdirected internet traffic says Oracle report

first_imgThe Naval War College published a paper titled, “China’s Maxim – Leave No Access Point Unexploited: The Hidden Story of China Telecom’s BGP Hijacking” that contained a number of claims about purported efforts by the Chinese government to manipulate BGP routing in order to intercept internet traffic. Doug Madory, Director of Internet Analysis at Oracle’s Internet Intelligence team, in his recent blog post addresses the paper’s claims. He said, “I don’t intend to address the paper’s claims around the motivations of these actions. However, there is truth to the assertion that China Telecom (whether intentionally or not) has misdirected internet traffic (including out of the United States) in recent years. I know because I expended a great deal of effort to stop it in 2017”. SK Broadband, formerly known as Hanaro, experienced a brief routing leak on 9 December 2015,  which lasted a little more than a minute. During the incident, SK’s ASN, AS9318, announced over 300 Verizon routes that were picked up by OpenDNS’s BGPstream service. This leak was announced exclusively through China Telecom (AS4134), one of SK Broadband’s transit providers. Just minutes after that, AS9318 began transiting the same routes from Verizon APAC (AS703) to China Telecom (AS4134). The China telecom in turn began announcing them to international carriers such as Telia (AS1299), Tata (AS6453), GTT (AS3257) and Vodafone (AS1273), which resulted in AS paths such as: … {1299, 6453, 3257, 1273} 4134 9318 703 Doug says, “Networks around the world who accepted these routes inadvertently sent traffic to Verizon APAC (AS703) through China Telecom (AS4134). Below is a traceroute mapping the path of internet traffic from London to address space belonging to the Australian government. Prior to this routing phenomenon, it never traversed China Telecom”. He added, “Over the course of several months last year, I alerted Verizon and other Tier 1 carriers of the situation and, ultimately, Telia and GTT (the biggest carriers of these routes) put filters in place to ensure they would no longer accept Verizon routes from China Telecom. That action reduced the footprint of these routes by 90% but couldn’t prevent them from reaching those who were peering directly with China Telecom”. Focus of the BGP hijack alerting The common focus of BGP hijack alerting is looking for unexpected origins or immediate upstreams for routed address space. But traffic misdirection can occur at other parts of the AS path. In this scenario, Verizon APAC (AS703) likely established a settlement-free peering relationship with SK Broadband (AS9318), unaware that AS9318 would then send Verizon’s routes exclusively on to China Telecom and who would in turn send them on to the global internet. Doug said, “We would classify this as a peer leak and the result was China Telecom’s network being inserted into the inbound path of traffic to Verizon. The problematic routing decisions were occurring multiple AS hops from the origin, beyond its immediate upstream. Thus, he adds that the routes accepted from one’s peers also need monitoring, which is a fairly rare practice. Blindly accepting routes from a peer enables the peer to insert itself into the path of your outbound traffic. To know more about this news in detail, read Doug Madory’s blog post. Women win all open board director seats in Open Source Initiative 2019

first_imgThe recently held Open Source Initiative’s 2019 Board elections elected six Board of Directors to its eleven-person Board. Two were elected from the affiliate membership, and four from the individual membership. If it wasn’t incredible enough that many women ran for the seats,  they have won all the seats! The six seats include two returning directors, Carol Smith and Molly de Blanc; and three new directors Pamela Chestek, Elana Hashman, and Hong Phuc Dang. Pamela Chestek (nominated by The Document Foundation) and Molly de Blanc (nominated by the Debian Project) captured the most votes from OSI Affiliate Members. The last seat is a tie between Christine Hall and Mariatta Wijaya and hence a runoff election will be required to identify the final OSI Board Director. The run off election started yesterday, March 18th (opening at 12:00 a.m. / 00:00) and will end on Monday, March 25th (closing at 12:00 a.m. / 00:00). Mariatta Wijaya, a core Python developer and a platform engineer at Zapier, told in a statement to Business Insider that she found not all open source projects were as welcoming, especially to women. That’s one reason why she’s running for the board of the Open Source Initiative, an influential organization that promotes and protects open source software communities. Wijaya also said, “I really want to see better diversity across the people who contribute to open source. Not just the users, the creators of open source. I would love to see that diversity improve. I would like to see a better representation. I did find it a barrier initially, not seeing more people who look like me in this space, and I felt like an outsider.” A person discussed six female candidates in misogynistic language on Slashdot, which is a tech-focussed social news website. The post also then labeled each woman with how much of a “threat” they were. Slashdot immediately took down this post “shortly afterward the OSI started seeing inappropriate comments posted on its website”. Molly de Blanc and Patrick Masson said this was the first time they saw such type of harassment of female OSI board candidates. They also said that such harassments in open source are not uncommon. Joshua R. Simmons, an Open source advocate, and web developer tweeted, “women winning 100% of the open seats in an election that drew attention from a cadre of horrible misogynists” OSI President, Simon Phipps said that the OSI committee is “thrilled the electorate has picked an all-female cohort to the new Board” To know more about these elections in detail, head over to the OSI official blog post.
