first_imgThe Inishowen Gospel Choir is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a special concert. The Inishowen Gospel Choir in action. The birthday celebration takes place on Saturday, November 21st at the Colgan Hall in Carndonagh.Formed in north Inishowen in 2005, the choir has gone on to become one of the north west’s best-loved musical acts.In the last decade the choir has appeared at events and festivals around Ireland and abroad, performing in Poland, the Netherlands, France and at the world famous Glastonbury festival for three years in a row. The choir has just had one of its busiest summers in recent years, which included playing the main stage of Body & Soul at the Electric Picnic, a festival the choir has performed at for the last four years. The last decade has also seen the choir collaborate live on stage with some of Ireland’s best-known musical talents including Moya Brennan, Liam O Maonlai, Declan O’Rourke, Duke Special and Bronagh Gallagher. The choir has invited back former members for the celebration and will also be performing with some of the musical acts that are closely associated with the Carndonagh-based singers. The night will bring together three acts involving the three founders of the choir – Lorna McLaughlin (The Henry Girls), Kate O’Callaghan, and Siobhán Shiels (Great White Lies).Acts involving the choir’s current musical directors, Neil Burns (Comrade Hat) and Anna Nolan (Velvet Alibi), will also perform. All the acts are active participants in the north west’s vibrant live music scene. The choir will also perform from the repertoire of gospel, folk, roots, rock and soul that has kept audiences coming back over the years.Although based in Inishowen the choir attracts singers from across north Donegal and Derry city.Anna Nolan said the choir is excited to have brought all the acts together to perform for the special occasion.“The choir has been a constantly evolving entity and has meant so much to so many people,” she said. “Down the years it has been a place where locally-based people from different backgrounds have come together to share the joys of singing and friendship. It has given these people the opportunity to sing in various contexts from festivals to churches, on tiny stages to massive stages. We hope that the choir continues its important work of bringing smiles to faces for years to come.”Tickets cost €10 – full price, €8 – concession, €5 – children, and are available at local Carndonagh outlets or on the door. Doors open 7.30pm.
